Transamerica Pyramid Gets Total Cleaning
San Francisco Chronicle

SAN FRANCISCO, April 29, 2007 -- San Francisco's landmark Transamerica Pyramid is almost through with a two-year complete cleaning.
In the final step, the building's 3,678 windows are being washed and polished with abrasive, The San Francisco Chronicle reported.
Earlier, replacing every caulking seam on the exterior consumed 18,000 man hours. David Rentfro, principal of San Francisco's Rainbow Waterproofing and Restoration, said the seams would be 50 miles long if laid out end to end.
Rentfro described washing an 853-foot-tall building as being just like washing a car, although on a much larger scale.
The building's last power-washing was completed in 1994, although the windows get done more frequently.
